Due to its geographical location, ecosystems and population density, Bangladesh is often exposed to climatic disasters, such as floods and cyclones. Poverty is widespread in the country and millions of children are forced to work instead of going to school. Chattogram, formerly known as Chittagong, is the second largest city in Bangladesh, after the capital Dhaka. Five million people live in Chattogram, which also has Bangladesh's largest port, one of the busiest in South Asia. The city contributes 12% to the country's GDP, but poverty still affects a large proportion of people in Chattogram. Children suffer the most from this; many do not get enough food and can only dream of going to school. In addition, children in Chattogram are at risk of being married off at a young age.
SOS Children's Villages has been in Bangladesh since 1972 and works to give children a safe childhood through family strengthening programs, children's villages and schools. It also has an emergency program and supports children in the world's largest refugee camp in Cox's Bazar.
